Perhaps Star Trek is not dead after all. The release of Star Trek on May 8th, the eleventh feature film in the Star Trek series, brought many sci-fi fans joy with the idea that the franchise would be relaunched. However, industry observers noted that the film was a major risk for parent studio Paramount. It was further argued that even though previous Star Trek films had been hits, none had been a blockbuster. There was no shortage of ammunition for those that wanted to argue that this film would lose millions at the box office. Despite the fact that only one Star Trek movie (in ten tries) had broken $100 million in U.S. box office receipts, Paramount cleared a $150 million production budget for the new Star Trek. It was clear that even a strong return at the box office for this move, something along the lines of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, could still result in major losses. Everyone believed that to relaunch the Star Trek franchise with a huge budget was a very risky proposition. With the benefit of the first week’s box office behind us, it has become clear that the doomsayers were a bit gloomy in their predictions.

Besting the previous record by $45 million this new Star Trek became (by far) the highest grossing opening weekend in the franchise’s 30 year history. Season movie analysts were stunned by the numbers for that opening weekend. The film has gone on to become the highest grossing Star Trek movie in history in only 7 days according to industry insiders.

Sources at Paramount Pictures have confirmed that there will be another Star Trek movie, tentatively scheduled for release in the summer of 2011. The scribes behind Star Trek have already signed on to write the next adventure in the space saga. It is unknown at this point if the director, J.J. Abrams will reprise his role in the directorial chair. Reports have surfaced that Mr. Abrams will be involved in any further Star Trek films at the producing level should he decide not to direct.

The word “perfume” in fact comes from a Latin word that means “through smoke.” The people of Egypt and Mesopotamia often burned incense to appease the gods. Aromatic oils were a very important part of early spiritual rituals. As the Persians and Romans began to refine their fragrances, perfume gradually became something that was not just reserved for ritual practices, but for enjoyment as well. Comeback Music Acts

In my late teens and early twenties, my musical taste was pretty hip. It was really touch and go before that, depending on what my friends were liking at the time. After having children, I went through a long stretch of listening to only my existing cds or classic rock stations. It was easy and comfortable, I knew all the words already, and the classic rock reminded me of my childhood. Several years back, once my children got old enough to program an mp3 player and develop their own taste in music, I realized I should start listening to some new music for them. I put on my old favourite alternative rock station, but was worried I would hate everything I heard.

I was extremely excited to discover that I heard two songs on the first day that I absolutely loved. I was delighted that I was still hip enough to love the newest, coolest music. The minute I got home I checked to see what my new favourite bands were. (By the way, I could love the internet just for all the lyric sites! There were so many time that I have asked, “What’s that song? The one that goes “blah, blah, blah… You know?” It’s amazing! I can find out in seconds!)

My reaction? You have got to be joking. What do you mean Weezer?!?! Although I was excited that Weezer had made a new album, it really didn’t prove my “I’m hip enough to like cool music” theory. I was technically probably just recognizing a sound that was already familiar. My Weezer cds from a DECADE ago were well-worn on my shelf.

I got my hopes up with my second song. I was not familiar with Gorillaz but I soon discovered with some research that the song Feelgood Inc. was a collaboration of the singer from Blur (also a favourite from ten years ago) and De La Soul (a band whose tape -yes, I said TAPE – was given to me in the 11th grade!)

Although I wasn’t exactly hip on the new music scene I definitely had really cool taste. And my children are already out in front. Last fall I joined them for their first concert: The Who - of course, a comeback band.

I watch other ladies in my age range lusting over Jon Bon Jovi’s comeback career and just laugh thinking of that frosted lion’s mane he used to wear.

As an adult in denial of my accumulating years, of course I am thrilled that so many bands are doing so well with their “comebacks”. They should keep at it if they were talented then still as talented now, by all means. It takes me back, and encourages me at the same time: If they can still rock, I can’t be THAT old.

Any day now I am expecting to look over my daughter’s shoulders to discover her searching on New Kids song lyrics or something similar. I’ll whisper, so her dad doesn’t hear “It goes like this. I know all their lyrics. I attended their concert in grade nine.” I wish I would’ve kept my New Kids on the Block t-shirt!

So many celebs today are trotting their autistic kids out in front of the media like a never-ending circus side show – now, however, there is another celeb who’s doing it all differently. And it should be no surprise it’s different, because he himself has Asperger’s, a form of autism, and sees the world differently.

This man is Michael Buckholtz – the platinum record producer, behind such artists as MC Hammer. This self-taught multi-instrumentalist, song-writer, producer is currently nearing the end of a 30-day hunger strike to draw national media attention to his cause.

His strike is to highlight two causes.

First, he seeks to highlight the fact that autism isn’t a children’s affliction, and that there are scores of adults living and coping with this condition today.

“There have been nationally televised features recently where one of the expert guests asked, ‘So where are all these so-called autistic adults? I don’t see them!’ This kind of misinformation is appalling,” said Buckholtz, “I wish to bring attention to the gross misrepresentation of who autistic people are and what we really act like.”

Michael continued by saying, “Many of us are invisible to the general public out of necessity. Mainstream media love to focus on the most severe cases, the tragedy, which becomes the average American’s vision of what autism is With this as the dominant perception, many with autism, whether it be high-functioning or not, are less likely to want their condition revealed to fellow associates, workmates, employers or anyone they come in contact with for fear they may lose a job or damage an important long-term relationship. In short, we blend in as best we can to survive. My hope is to generate massive energy around a humanitarian movement to include autistic adults in the everyday autism conversation because we are here and coping, some of us just barely.”

Michael’s second goal is as the spear-head of a grass-root, non-profit organization, Aid for Autistic Children Foundation, Inc. (www.aacfinc.org), established to raise funds for families who have undergone financial hardship as a result of autism in their families. From the uninsured autistic man who has to go to a hospital and doesn’t know where to turn, to families on the brink of bankruptcy due to treatments and therapies they’ve gone out of pocket to secure, Michael is shining a light on this completely disenfranchised segment of the population that’s at the end of their rope.

Michael continued, “The media driven wrong perception of what autism really is – and the variety of ages of people affected – makes it difficult for the poorest of people coping with autism to have their voices not only heard, but, taken seriously. I’m giving voice to the autism community’s repeated and continued request for this help – which today is virtually non-existent.”

Unlike what many think of when they envision someone with autism – shy, withdrawn, reticent – here again we find disparity in mainstream conventional understanding, for Michael is anything but quiet, or slow to speak about this mission. While we’re so accustomed to seeing celeb parents – here’s the real article: a man who is articulate, on a philanthropic tear, smart, talented, African-American, proud of what he’s been able to do so far, and looking to change how we think about autism .

Rate of Change (ROC) is another version of momentum oscillator. It is sometimes used. The ROC formula divides the current closing price with the oldest closing price instead of subtracting the oldest closing price from the current closing price as in the momentum oscillator.
